Extremely Loud Incredibly Close

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is a modern novel written by Jonathan Safran Foer. It focuses on the aftermath of 9/11 and how a young boy deals with the loss of his father due to this tragedy.

There are two narrators and essentially two story lines that are taking place in the novel. This can be a little confusing at first, but if you pay attention it basically goes every other chapter. Odd chapters are narrated by Oskar Schell, the little boy that lost his father while even chapters are narrated by his grandfather. Pay close attention because the stories will eventually intertwine and it will become one story instead of two.

Pay attention to:

  • Symbols: door knobs, keys, blue vase, treasure maps
  • Different types of pages: blank, colorful, images, single word/phrase
  • Relationships:
    • Oskar and his father
    • Oskar and his mother
    • Mother and father
    • Grandmother and Oskar
    • Grandmother and grandfather
  • Treasure hunt: there are several of these that take place during the novel. Make sure that you know the small ones that he does with his father and the overall arcing hunt that takes place as a way for Oskar to have closure.
