Dead Words
The following words are no longer allowed to be used in any written assignment for this class…yes that also means homework, classwork, blogs, etc. You must get use to using more formal language and those are all opportunities for great practice.
- Contractions - couldn't, shouldn't, can't, won't, don't, I'm, and all other uses to shorten words. They must be spelled out. (i.e. could not, should not, cannot, etc.)
- All abbreviations except common ones such as Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms., A.M., P.M., B.C., A.D., etc.
- All slang words
- Any of the second person usage of you (you, your, yours, yourself, yourselves)
- Instead of writing, "You might be wondering…" write "One may wonder…"
- Phrases such as (but not limited to):
- In conclusion…
- I am going to talk about…
- My paper is going to be about…
- Have you ever…
- I think…
- In my opinion…
- In the book…
- All words that do not really define anything. A list of these words are all listed below. You need to get use to being more descriptive.
